Peonies require a winter "chilling" period to stimulate new bud growth. This means they need about six weeks of temperatures below 40 degrees F.

Peonies need at least eight hours of full sun. The more sun, the more blooms your peony will produce. If planted in less than full sun, your peonies will take longer to mature and won't produce as many blooms.

If your growing zone is on the warmer end of their preference (Zone 8), then morning sun and afternoon shade would be best.

Well-draining soil with a neutral pH is ideal for peonies. Peonies preferr a sandy loam — a soil with equal parts sand, clay, and compost.

Peonies can live for many decades so spending a little time to amend the soil upon planting is well worth it!

Water peonies on a regular basis during their first fall and spring. Once established, water well every week or two —maybe a little more if it's been a sweltering, dry summer.

Peonies don't like to sit in soggy, wet soil. Good drainage is important to prevent root rot and other issues.

Peony roots are dug and shipped as bare roots in the fall when the plants are dormant and the buds are mature. Shipping will start the week of October 27th through the week of November 3rd.

It is recommended that you plant your peony roots as soon as possible after receiving them.

Think long-term when you are planting peonies. Peonies will take about three years to mature, but once established, they can live for decades or even centuries if they are properly cared for and left undisturbed.
